Syrian President Vows Legal Pursuit of Assad

(MENAFN) Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa announced on Monday that his administration intends to pursue justice against former leader Bashar al-Assad through every lawful channel available, while avoiding direct confrontation with Russia, where Assad currently resides.

In an interview with a news agency, Sharaa emphasized the deep emotional scars left by years of conflict, saying: “There are entire generations that have suffered tremendous psychological trauma. So, it's very important that the period of liberation give people new hope for their return and for reconstruction.”

His remarks highlighted the importance of national recovery and healing following years of authoritarian rule and civil strife.

Looking back on his own assumption of power, Sharaa reflected: “Entering this palace wasn't a very positive experience. Much evil towards the Syrian people came out of this palace since it was built.”

His statement underscored a symbolic break from the legacy of the Assad era, signaling a new direction for Syria’s leadership.

The president also clarified the conduct of his government during the conflict, stating: “We have not taken any actions outside Syrian territory, nor have we targeted anyone other than the regime. We saved the people from the oppression imposed by the criminal regime.”

He reiterated this point, emphasizing that their focus remained solely on dismantling the previous regime and relieving the people from its tyranny.

Addressing questions surrounding Assad’s future, Sharaa affirmed: “We will use all legal means possible to demand that Bashar al-Assad be brought to justice.”

His stance suggests a commitment to international legal norms while steering clear of military escalation.

Nonetheless, Sharaa acknowledged the geopolitical complexities involved, cautioning: “Engaging in a conflict with Russia right now would be too costly for Syria. Nor would it be in the country's interest.”

This measured approach indicates a strategic balancing act between holding Assad accountable and maintaining fragile diplomatic ties with Moscow.
