Syrian Forces Enter Qamishli Under Agreement with YPG

(MENAFN) Syrian security forces began moving into the northeastern city of Qamishli on Tuesday as part of a ceasefire and phased integration deal with the YPG, according to official sources.

Reports indicated that a convoy of Internal Security Forces, consisting of nearly 100 personnel and around 20 vehicles, entered the city, where residents reportedly welcomed their arrival.

Syria’s Interior Ministry had earlier confirmed that security units were on standby to implement the agreement reached with the YPG.

The development follows a “comprehensive agreement” announced by the Syrian government on Friday, which aims to end the country’s ongoing divisions and initiate a new phase of full integration between the state and YPG forces.

This latest accord, covering Hasakah and Qamishli and the integration of military units, builds on an earlier agreement signed on Jan. 18. That agreement called for a ceasefire and the incorporation of YPG members and institutions into Syrian state structures, though the government reported that violations by the YPG had continued, describing them as a “serious escalation.”

The agreements come after a Syrian Army operation in eastern and northeastern Syria, which regained significant territory following repeated breaches of the March 2025 accord by the YPG.
